ECE497

 

Objectives and Outcomes

In the spring term, students should demonstrate

  • an understanding of the historical and societal context of a particular hardware and/or software system
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • an understanding of the basic steps of the design process
  • an ability to write a technical paper based on a literature review
  • proficiency in the development of design requirements for a hardware and/or
  • software system

Deliverables

  • Background research paper
  • Ethics assignments (2)
  • Project requirements paper
  • Project contract
  • Project portfolio

Logistics

  • Seminar instructor meets with students 2 hours per week for instruction on technical background research and report writing, professional ethics and an overview of the design process. Detailed feedback on writing will be provided and papers will be rewritten if necessary.
  • Students will explore and select project topics.
  • Department faculty will be asked to submit in both written and oral forms, ideas for projects.
  • Department chairs will solicit project ideas from the industrial advisory committees.
  • Students must submit to the seminar instructor, by the end of the term, a project contract, signed by the student and a faculty supervisor. A copy will be kept in the department office in the ECE497 folder.
  • Seminar instructor will set deadlines for deliverables for the year.
  • Grades will be submitted by seminar instructor based on deliverables.

 

ECE498

 

Objectives and Outcomes

In the fall term, students should demonstrate

  • proficiency in writing a detailed project proposal
  • an ability to give an oral presentation
  • proficiency in the brainstorming, feasibility analysis and simulation stages of the
  • design process
  • proficiency in documenting a design project
  • an ability to work steadily and effectively to meet project deadlines

Deliverables

  • Design proposal
  • Proposal presentation
  • Weekly progress reports
  • Design notebook
  • Project portfolio

Logistics

  • Project supervisors and students will update project contracts and submit them to the seminar instructor if any changes are made to a student's project topic or supervisor.
  • Project supervisors will meet with students weekly to support the development of the oral presentation and detailed design proposal.
  • Project supervisors will provide feedback on design proposal drafts.
  • Seminar instructor will organize and schedule proposal presentations and provide proposal guidelines.
  • Grade will be submitted by project supervisor based on deliverables.

Objectives and Outcomes

In the winter term, students should demonstrate

  • an ability to work steadily and effectively to meet project deadlines
    proficiency in the implementation, debugging and testing phases of the design process
  • proficiency in writing a final project report
  • proficiency in oral presentations

Deliverables

  • Final project report
  • Oral presentation of project
  • Demonstration of working project
  • Project portfolio

Logistics

  • Project supervisors will meet with students weekly to advise them on project implementation and final report writing
  • Project supervisors will provide feedback on project report drafts.
  • Seminar instructor will organize and schedule oral presentations and demonstrations and provide final report guidelines.
  • Grade will be submitted by project supervisor based on deliverables.
